How to Find Your Radio Serial Number

The serial number location depends on your radio brand:

  • Becker: 4-digit number on the chassis label on the back/side of the radio unit
  • VW / Audi: Press and hold the AM button until the serial appears on display, or check the radio label after removal
  • Ford: Press and hold preset buttons 1 + 6 simultaneously for 5 seconds
  • Renault: Press and hold the button combination specified in the radio manual — typically shown as "SAFE" then a number sequence
  • Opel / Vauxhall: Press the AM/FM and SCAN buttons together, or remove the radio and check the back label
  • Honda: Press the 1 and 6 preset buttons simultaneously while turning on the radio
Tip: If your radio shows "SAFE" or "CODE" and you can't access any button combination, your radio may already be in a lockout state. Turn off the ignition, wait 1 hour, then try again before entering the code.

Method 2: Vehicle Documents

When a car is sold new, the radio code is often included in the vehicle's documentation pack. Before trying anything else, check these locations:

📋 Where to Look

  • Service history booklet — some manufacturers include a separate radio code card tucked inside
  • Glove box — dealers sometimes attach a sticker or card with the code inside the glovebox lid
  • Original purchase documents — the invoice or new car delivery checklist may list the radio code
  • Wallet card — many manufacturers supply a small plastic card with the radio code for the owner's wallet
Used car? If you bought the car second-hand, the previous owner may have kept or discarded the code card. In this case, use the online calculator (Method 1) or contact the dealer (Method 3).

Method 3: Contact Your Dealer With Your VIN

If the online calculator doesn't support your brand and you have no documents, your franchise dealer can look up the radio code using your VIN (Vehicle Identification Number).

  • The VIN is 17 characters and found on the dashboard (visible through the windscreen), door jamb sticker, and vehicle registration document
  • Most franchise dealers will provide the code free of charge to the registered keeper
  • Some brands (BMW, Mercedes, Peugeot, Citroën) require you to visit the dealer in person with proof of ownership

How to Enter Your Radio Code

Once you have your code, follow these steps to unlock the radio:

  1. Turn the ignition to the ACC position (ignition on, engine off)
  2. The radio should power on and show "CODE", "SAFE", or a series of dashes
  3. Use the preset/station buttons (numbered 1–5 or 1–6) to enter each digit of your code
  4. Press OK, SCAN, or AS to confirm (button varies by brand)
  5. The radio unlocks immediately and returns to normal operation
⚠️ Attempt limit: Most radios allow only 3 incorrect attempts before locking out for 1 hour (some lock permanently). Do not guess — make sure you have the correct code before entering it.

Brand-Specific Entry Methods

  • Becker: Use the numbered station buttons to set each digit, then press AS to confirm
  • VW / Audi: Press preset buttons to enter digits; the display shows the code as you type; press and hold preset 1 to confirm
  • Ford: Use the 1–6 preset buttons; each press increments the digit; hold the last button to confirm
  • Renault: Enter digits using the preset buttons then press the TA or RDS button to confirm
  • Opel: Use the preset buttons and press the SCAN button to confirm

FAQ

Is it really free to get my radio code?

Yes — for supported brands. The RadiPins.com calculator is completely free with no registration or payment required. We calculate the code directly from the serial number using manufacturer algorithms.

What if my radio brand isn't listed?

If your brand isn't on the list, try your dealer with the VIN (Method 3). We are continually adding support for more brands — check back or bookmark the site.

My radio shows "WAIT" — what does that mean?

"WAIT" or a countdown means the radio is in a lockout period following too many incorrect code attempts. Wait the specified time (usually 1 hour), then try again with the correct code.

Do I need to remove the radio to find the serial?

Not always. Many radios can display the serial number on-screen using a button combination (see Method 1 above). Only if the on-screen method fails should you remove the radio to check the label on the back.

Will entering the wrong code damage the radio?

No — but after 3 wrong attempts most radios lock for 1 hour and display "WAIT". Some older models (certain Volkswagen Group radios) can lock permanently after 10 incorrect attempts total across the radio's lifetime. Always verify before entering.

My code unlocked the radio but it stopped working again after I switched the car off. Why?

This usually means the radio has a persistent memory issue — the code isn't being retained because the radio is still losing power. Check the radio's fuse and the constant live (memory) wire connection. Once fixed, enter the code once more and it will stay unlocked.
