Select a series above to see the required format
When the radio shows SAFE, switch the ignition to ACC. Hold the SCAN button (or button 1+6 on older units) for 5 seconds. The serial number appears in two 4-character groups. Combine them: the full serial starts with VWZ.
Remove the radio using DIN release tools. The serial is on a white label on the side or top of the unit — format: VWZ1Z2W1500003. Enter the full serial including VWZ.
VAG dealers can read the code directly from the VIN. Alternatively, check the card supplied with the vehicle or the small sticker in the owners manual pouch.

All VAG radios have built-in anti-theft. When the radio loses power (battery change, cable disconnection), it locks and shows SAFE. The PIN is required to reactivate it.
Use preset buttons 1–4. Each press increases the digit by one. When all 4 digits are set, press and hold button 5 (or the AM/FM button) to confirm. The radio unlocks immediately.
SAFE 1000 means 1000 attempts remain. You have plenty of tries. Enter the code carefully. If it shows SAFE 0, wait with ignition on ACC for 60 minutes before trying again.
