Remove the radio from the dashboard using DIN removal tools. The serial sticker is on the side or top of the chassis. CDR 500 stickers show a serial starting GM150 while CDR 2005 stickers start GM0205.
On some Blaupunkt models you can access the serial through the radio menu. With the radio on, press and hold the TP button while the radio shows the clock. Some units display the serial after holding 1 and 6 simultaneously during startup.
Look at the radio faceplate for the model name. CDR 500 units are typically older (1996–2005) and the faceplate says "CDR 500" or "CDR 500 E". CDR 2005 units are newer (2000–2010) and say "CDR 2005" or similar. The serial prefix (GM150 vs GM0205) will also confirm which series you have.

SAFE means too many wrong codes were tried. Turn the ignition to ACC and leave it for one hour. The radio will switch from SAFE back to CODE, then you can try again with the correct code.
Golf IV (1997–2003) Concert radios are typically CDR 500 (GM150 serial). Golf V (2004–2009) Concert and Symphony radios are CDR 2005 (GM0205 serial). Check the serial sticker to be certain.
With the radio showing CODE or a blinking cursor, use the station preset buttons 1–4 to enter each digit. Once all four are entered, press the SCAN or AS button to confirm. The radio will turn on immediately.
