Subaru serials start with SU685 (e.g. SU685AX9012989). The sticker is on the top or side of the radio unit. Remove the radio from the dashboard to access it — most Subaru models require a trim panel removal tool.

How to Find Your Subaru Radio Serial

Method 1 — Radio chassis sticker

Remove the radio from the center console. Subaru radios are typically secured with two to four screws behind the trim bezel. Once removed, the serial sticker on the chassis reads SU685 followed by an alphanumeric string.

Method 2 — Subaru dealer

Subaru dealers can retrieve the radio code from your VIN using the Subaru dealer portal. This service is free for the registered owner and takes only a few minutes at the service counter.

Method 3 — Subaru owner's manual

Some Subaru models included a radio code card tucked behind the vehicle documents in the glovebox. Check behind the owner's manual and in the service history folder.

FAQ

My Subaru Forester radio shows "---" after battery replacement — what do I do?

Three dashes mean the radio is in code entry mode. Enter your 4-digit code using the preset station buttons (1–4). After the last digit press TUNE/SEEK to confirm. If the code is correct the radio will turn on immediately.

How do I remove the radio from a Subaru Legacy to get the serial?

On most Legacy and Outback models, remove the center console surround trim (it clips off), then unscrew the four Torx or Phillips screws holding the radio in place. Disconnect the antenna and wiring harnesses before fully removing the unit.

My serial starts with SU but not SU685 — will this work?

The database covers the SU685 series which covers most 1998–2012 Subaru radios. If your serial starts with a different SU prefix, try entering it anyway — if it exists in our database it will return a result.
